What’s new with 3G/EDGE/GPRS?

Video call
Video calling lets you see people live on screen as you speak to them. You can also see whats happening around them. Simply press ‘video call ‘ instead of voice call to start, and your phone does the rest. You can make a video call to another B-Mobile 3G subscriber who is using a 3G phone.

Multimedia Message(MSS)
Use MMS to send pictures and videos to other phones or to an email address.

Email
Access your emails no matter where you are. You don’t have to be confined to your desk to get your office emails, gmail, hotmail, yahoo mail or any other email on your handset. If your handset supports it you can configure your druknet, or office emails to be retrieved on your phone.

Some frequently asked questions

What are GPRS, EDGE and 3G mobile services?

ANS:- These are the 2.5 generation, 2.75 generation and 3rd generation mobile services which makes the delivery of data over mobile and mobile internet possible, thereby facilitating innovative content growth for both commercial and entertainment purposes. Moreover the user experience will be different from current 2nd generation mobile network.

What are the services available with these networks?

ANS:- Some of the services available on these networks other than voice call and SMS are:

* Internet & e-mail on mobile, web/ WAP surfing
* Send/receive (MMS) multimedia services like pictures, sounds, video clips, text etc.
* Download music, games, animations, wallpapers, video and audio clips, polyphonic tones, logos …etc.
* Video calls for 3G
* Mobile broadband using pocket size USB data card modem or PCMCIA card which allows you to surf internet in and out of * home using your PC or laptops.

How is 3G different from GPRS and EDGE?

ANS:- All the services available on GPRS and EDGE is available on 3G, however the user experience on 3G shall be different due to high speed. Video call service is available only with 3G network.

What will be the coverage of GPRS, EDGE and 3G?

ANS:- GPRS service is available where ever there is B-mobile network. EDGE service is available in the twenty Dzongkhag headquarters and some major towns. 3G service is available only in Thimphu initially.

Can these services be availed on any handsets?

ANS:- Though there is no restriction on brand of the handset, every mobile handset do not support the services. To avail the services, you need to have a mobile handset that is GPRS, EDGE or 3G compatible. Depending on your choice of service, a 3G phone is downward compatible.

How do the customers avail these services?

ANS:- First you need to have a handset that is compatible with the service you wish to avail. Then you have to configure your handset. The basic steps on how to configure your handset is given below. You then have to subscribe to one of the data packages with B-mobile, or subscribe on pay-as-you-use system. After the subscription, your phone number shall be configured at the B-mobile switch. You can now use the data services. If you have any problem while configuring your hand set you may contact, B-Mobile staff at the BTL head office counters. You can also directly contact the B-mobile staff in the head office to assist you in your handset configuration or to avail the data services.

Basic handset Configuration

(1) Ensure that the phone is GPRS capable (Compatible)

(2) Go to GPRS connection setting and give appropriate connection name (it can be anything): example B-Mobile

(3) Set the Access Point Name: set it as internet (all small letters and this field is absolutely necessary)

(4) Select GPRS or packet data as data bearer

(5) Authentication Field: set as normal

(6) Username and password need not be set

(7) DNS and IP address automatic

(8) In the web setting select appropriate home address:

For example www.druknet.bt/m

(8) Activate your settings as default (absolutely necessary)

(9) Contact BTL for GPRS/3G activation (absolutely necessary)


Note : the handset configuration will differ depending on model and manufacturer of handset.

The average speed for 3G/GPRS & EDGE are as follows:

* For GPRS data service, the data speed range is from 30kbps to 40kbps
* For EDGE data service, the data speed range is from 100kbps to 130 kbps’
* For 3G data service, the data speed range is from 550kbps to 1mbps
